Superstitions have always been a part of human culture as early as the 1st-century BC These were usually beliefs that had connections with luck and spiritual beings. But even today, with the great advances man has made in science and technology, there are still surprisingly a lot of people who believe in these superstitions.
Gambling abounds with a lot of superstitions, probably because winning was dependent on luck, and a lot of gamblers would do anything just to improve their luck and their chances of winning. There are gamblers who have their lucky tables, their lucky machine, or even their lucky dealer. Some of these gambling superstitions are quite believable while others seem downright absurd.
One example is the routines that gamblers usually follow before throwing the dice like blowing on them, kissing them, or rubbing them between their hands. The explanations for these kinds of behavior are varied. Some say that blowing on the dice leads magic fairies to make the outcome favorable to the thrower. Kissing the dice is said to bring positive vibrations, and rubbing the dice between the hands is said to warm the dice enough to result in a "hot" winning streak. Whatever the explanations, they all, of course, presumably result in the thrower becoming a winner. There are some players, however, who look unfavorably on these actions since they have a tendency of slowing or delaying the game.
There are also numerous charms that players believe to bring them good luck. The four-leaf clover is said to provide luck because the leaf alone is a rare find. The rabbit's foot, specifically the left hind foot, not only produced good luck, but also served as protection. To trigger these favorable effects, one has to rub the rabbit's foot before the start of the game. The horseshoe amulet had its origins in Europe as it was linked to their pagan Moon goddesses, and the bearer of a horseshoe is said to invoke good luck from those goddesses.
There are also numerous spells that gamblers are encouraged to do as early as the night before the game to give them an unending winning streak during the games. These spells usually involve gathering several objects like "magic" oils, candles, incense, and tarot cards. Others are instructed to rub magic oil on the money they plan on using for betting, while others are instructed to do some visualizations and incantations while laying the hands over the objects.
There are some who adhere to certain rituals believing it is these rituals that cause to give them good fortune. Some brew a special hand wash using several herbs like alfalfa, berries, cinnamon chips, Irish moss, chamomile, coriopsis, and calendula. They wash their hands with this special hand wash before going off to gamble. Some bathe in a special formula of salt water, blue stone, sugar, and Rose oil, mixed with their own urine!
Last, but not the least, there are those who consult dream books. These books are said to interpret certain dreams into numbers, as well as tell signs in the dreams for lucky days for gambling and winning.
